Tips & Hints
CV Tips
A CV is designed to provide the reader with a quick overview of your current details and as such should include:
Name & Address
- Ensure your details are up to date.
Contact Details
- Include both a mobile number and home number.
- Include a suitable e-mail address (preferably home).
Education/Qualifications
- Ensure that you include relevant industry qualification e.g. CeMAP.
- It is not necessary to include the names and addresses of schools or colleges as employers are unlikely to require this information.
- Most GCSE subjects are probably not of too much relevance to an employer so could be summarised to 9 GCSEs including maths & English for example.
Work Experience
- With the changes in regulatory checks it is wise to include a comprehensive list covering the last 10 years.
- Include the name of your employer and your job title.
- From here you could then bullet point the key points of your role profile.
- Highlight all relevant parts or your work history that would be useful in the role you are applying for.
Personal Details
- Feel free to include interests and hobbies but keep it brief.
A well presented CV should be 2-3 pages in length at the most, if you have many years work history you could include a full 10 years then summarise the rest in a list format.
Bullet points are easy to read and would be the recommended style to use, as long sentences and paragraphs are difficult to read and may be overlooked.
If you have a very short work history or have been with the same employer for many years then it may be appropriate to pad out your CV to around 2 pages.
It is often advantageous to include performance figures and achievements, however it is only advisable to do this if you can evidence your statements. If you make wild claims they will come back to haunt you at interview.
If you are interested in more than 1 type of role, have 2 separate CVs that highlight your relevant experience of the jobs that you are applying for.
